Billy Moma arrives at St. Mark’s as a newly ordained priest, determined to become a pastor his parish can trust. His devotion to God is sincere. So is his desire for men. Unable to imagine those truths existing together, he keeps them apart through restraint, silence, and carefully maintained boundaries.

One night, away from his clerical identity, he introduces himself to Dr. Max Clement as Luca. Warm and direct, Max falls for him immediately and asks to see him again. Billy feels the attraction too, but refuses a date. He can allow himself a brief encounter; he cannot allow it to become part of his everyday life.

Soon afterward, Max fails to save a seven-year-old girl. Accustomed to helping others, he struggles to accept the limits of what he can do. His guilt leads him to confession at St. Mark’s. Behind the wooden screen, Billy listens as Max speaks openly about his pain, unaware that his confessor is Luca. For Billy, offering spiritual care to the man he desires makes the division within his own life increasingly difficult to bear.

As they continue to encounter each other, Billy can no longer keep his assumed name separate from his public identity. Max wants to know him fully. Billy withdraws, denies his feelings, and repeatedly tries to restore a safe distance. Yet his touch and his willingness to linger reveal the attachment his words refuse to acknowledge. Their growing intimacy makes it harder for him to believe that denying himself will ever bring him peace.

The crisis begins with a photograph. A parishioner captures an intimate moment between them and shares it in a parish group chat. It eventually reaches the diocese. Billy’s private conflict becomes a public matter, forcing him to confront his role in the Church and the cost of continued concealment. He decides to leave the priesthood, but also considers leaving Max, imagining he must face the consequences alone.

On Max’s bench, Billy leaves the coat he has never returned, together with a letter. It is a confession in reverse: the man who has listened to other people’s secrets finally puts his own fear, desire, and love into words. Even then, he tries to make that honesty a farewell. Max reads the letter and refuses to accept the goodbye. He does not ask Billy to betray God or surrender the right to make his own decisions. He asks him to stop treating self-denial as his only possible future.

In the end, Billy removes his collar himself. He acknowledges his love for Max and takes responsibility for his decision to leave the priesthood. They leave the city together to begin a new life, carrying their faith with them. Billy can finally love, under his own name, the man he once dared to approach only as Luca.
